How to Update Your Motherboard, Chipset, and System Drivers

This guide walks you through how to safely update your motherboard, chipset, LAN, audio, storage, and other system-level drivers.

Updated over a week ago

What Are Motherboard and Chipset Drivers?

Your motherboard drivers help the operating system communicate with your hardware. These typically include:

  • Chipset drivers – manage communication between CPU, RAM, and components

  • LAN drivers – for Ethernet networking

  • Audio drivers – for onboard sound chips

  • Storage drivers – for SATA or NVMe SSDs

  • USB drivers – for ports and peripherals

Step 1: Identify Your Motherboard

Option A: Check System Information

  1. Press Windows + R, type msinfo32, and hit Enter

  2. Look for BaseBoard Manufacturer and BaseBoard Product — this gives your motherboard’s brand and model

Option B: Check Physically

Open your case and look for a printed model name on the motherboard itself. It typically looks like:
ASUS TUF B660M-PLUS, MSI PRO B550M, etc.

Step 2: Go to the Manufacturer’s Support Site

Once you know your motherboard model, visit the official website:

⚠️ Avoid third-party driver software — always download directly from the official sources.

Step 3: Download the Latest Drivers

  1. Search for your exact motherboard model

  2. Choose your current operating system (e.g., Windows 11 64-bit)

  3. Download the latest versions of:

    • Chipset drivers

    • LAN/Ethernet drivers

    • Audio drivers

    • SATA/NVMe storage drivers

    • USB drivers

Step 4: Install the Drivers

  1. Run each installer one by one

  2. Follow the on-screen instructions

  3. Reboot your PC after each important update (especially for chipset or audio drivers)

Optional Tools

You can also use official utilities to auto-detect and update drivers:

These tools help find and install the correct chipset drivers for Intel or AMD platforms.

✅ After Updating

  • Open Device Manager (Windows + X > Device Manager)

  • Check that there are no missing or flagged drivers

  • Test audio, USB, and network functionality

Your system should now be running at its full potential!
